Just missed it. I was reading about the Crystal Bowl class and it was probably just about over. Nancy Watters, certified sound therapist and crystal bowl practitioner was offering a free relaxation class for cancer patients and their support people. It was described this way:
A special relaxation class, featuring the soothing, pure harmonic tones of Alchemy quartz crystal singing bowls and overtone chant. Shift brain states, reduce stress, reduce pain and boost immune system functioning. Leave feeling balanced and blissful.
As far as I know, I don’t have cancer. I was thinking about my cat who has a lump. The homeopath and I are treating it as if it is cancer. I didn’t know if Nancy treats animals. I didn’t know if an animal’s stress response works like a human’s. In fact I knew only that Nancy practices crystal bowl healing and offers sessions in her Sound Sanctuary. Her newsletter advised of the cancer class and a crystal bowl sale. So I went searching for more information.
Nancy works with Alchemy brand crystal bowls. She says they are literally the best in the world. They are made from quartz crystal and various minerals and gems, each with specific health properties. She has a set of 20 therapeutic bowls including malachite, platinum, celestite and kyanite.
In addition to her cancer relaxation class, Nancy offers crystal bowl concerts and training. She holds a monthly sound circle, weekly “sound baths”, and a musical prayer and meditation circle on specified dates. She also offers special events such as a combination crystal bowl and reiki event.
Nancy is not only a reiki master but also a registered clinical counsellor in private practice. She has additional experience in a variety of holistic modalities.
Nancy has made various appearances including sessions at the Pain Clinic at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, the Medical Qi Gong Group in Victoria and the West Coast Sacred Music Festival in Vancouver. Sometimes Nancy performs Sound Meditations with Norm Smookler flautist and Tanya Devine, a didgeridoo sound healer.Tanya is described as helping “people move energy through their system with the low vibrational instrument of the Didjeridu being played over the body. She offers sound medicine during yoga classes, breathwork sessions, weddings and ceremonies”.
While Tanya also plays crystal and Tibetan bowls and some additional instruments, her focus is on the healing vibrations of the didjeridu. Playing the instrument since 2006, she travelled to Australia to return a ceremonial didjeridu to the original maker. It was then given back to her by the family concerned for her to carry its medicine.
A J Block in his Didge Project website describes how the didjeridu can treat sleep apnea. He explains how two didjeridu, playing in different keys, can produce a pulsing 7 hz frequency that can entrain the brain. This frequency is on the border of alpha and theta brainwave states.
Block goes on to explain that transporting listeners through the various brainwave states via didjeridu was the idea behind the Didge Project album titled Didjeridu Meditation: An Odyssey through Consciousness.
Didjeridu makes a beautiful accompaniment to space drum, also called hang drum. One might speculate that the space drum is related to singing bowls, just played upside down. Its sound is described as being like a combination of harp and bells. And indeed it has been used for sound healing by Gabriel Goldberg, Ecstatic Dance in Los Angeles and Miracles Wellness Center in Dubai.
